N200m worth of items missing at ex-militants’ camp in Obubra

There are reports that over N200m worth of items have been carted away during the relocation of ex-militants formerly camped at the Federal Government’s Amnesty Camp in Obubra, Cross River State.
The camp was officially closed last year after the successful training of over 26,000 ex-militants on non-violence transformational training.
Most of the items installed for the camp use such as the heavy duty generators, cabin offices, air-conditioners, television sets, computers and other facilities were found missing.
The relocation of the items were approved by the Amnesty Office but there are suspicions that the items were diverted possibly for personal use.
A government official at the camp who did not want to be named reportedly said, “Government people came here with official letters from the Amnesty Office and we had to let them carry the items away.
“We don’t know if they were diverted but what we know is that they told us the items were to be taken to the Lagos camp. Certainly, all these things removed must be worth between N200m to N250m,” he added.
The Amnesty officials however denied knowledge of any missing items in Obubra, saying: “It’s a long time we left Obubra and we cannot say anything about the place for now.”
The Obubra camp is expected to be reopened soon to receive the ex-militants as the Amnesty office is working to ensure a hitch-free intake of the additional trainees that may be drawn from Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Ondo and Edo states.
